NEW YORK (AP) — An ex-convict charged with killing two people in an alleged two-day spree of shootings, robberies and carjacking on Staten Island has pleaded not guilty.
Tyrell Brown’s lawyer entered the plea for him Friday to murder and other charges. Attorney Mark Fonte declined to comment afterward.
Assistant District Attorney Anthony Catalano says the 25-year-old Brown is responsible for “the most violent murder and robbery spree on Staten Island in recent memory.”
Prosecutors say it started when Brown shot 23-year-old Devon Powell dead early Sunday. Authorities say just 15 minutes later, Brown robbed and killed 40-year-old Kuwan Collins, then stole a Hummer in a gunpoint carjacking.
Police said they spotted the vehicle on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Monday, but Brown sped off and broke through the toll barrier.
He was arrested Tuesday night.
