Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci and his new media company Scaramucci Post deleted and apologized for posting a Twitter poll Tuesday morning that asked users to guess the number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust.
Scaramucci’s weeks-old company posted a survey on Twitter that asked its 24,200 followers whether 1 million, 1 to 2 million, 2 to 3 million, or more than 5 million people died during the 1940s genocide.
Scaramucci, who is not Jewish, had the poll taken down within an hour of its being posted by social media employee Lance Laifer.
“This poll was put up by @lancelaifer without consulting @scaramucci who is traveling in London,” the company said in a follow-up tweet Tuesday morning. “The intent of the poll was to highlight ignorance of the basic facts of the Holocaust. I take full responsibility for it.”
An estimated 6 million Jewish people, and 11 million people total, were killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust.
Scaramucci’s company was also recently criticized for posting a photo of an Anne Frank Halloween costume and asking followers for their “thoughts.”
Scaramucci served in Trump’s White House for 10 days in August. His background was in Wall Street trading and he supported Trump during his 2016 campaign. Following his departure from the West Wing, he launched Scaramucci Post, which he told a reporter at the launch “we have absolutely no idea what the Scaramucci Post is, and neither do you.”
