Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., promised during an awards show acceptance speech that she would not only resist the Trump administration, she would seek to impeach the president.
“I don’t care how big you are, I don’t care how high you think you are, if you come for me, I’m coming for you,” Waters said while accepting the 2017 Black Girls Rock! social humanitarian award earlier in August in Newark, NJ.
“And so whether it’s the president of the United States of America or any of his Cabinet, we will say to them ‘we will resist you, we will not allow you to damage this country the way that you’re doing, we will not allow you to take us backwards.'”
“Not only will we resist you, we will impeach you, Mr. President,” the Californian Democrat added.
Waters was honored by the initiative, which celebrates women of color excelling in their respective fields, for her commitment to truth, justice, and “the way you keep it real all the time.”
“Auntie Maxine,” as she is known to her fans, told the room they could do things others said they could not do before ending on the political note.
“I want you to know if it was not for the love and respect shown to me by black women, those right-wing, ultra-conservative, alt-right haters in this country, they would have me believe I’m too black, I’m too confrontational, I’m too tough, and I’m too disrespectful of them,” Waters said. “But now I know I’m simply a strong black woman.”
Waters has been a vocal opponent of Trump and his legislative agenda, most recently slamming him for his response to the violence in Charlottesville. She also became a viral sensation for continually telling Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin she was “reclaiming” her time during a congressional committee hearing about the international finance system.
