Fresh on the heels of his confirmation, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will depart for a four-nation trip spanning the next four days, the State Department said.
Pompeo, who was confirmed by the Senate and sworn in by Justice Samuel Alito on Thursday, will travel to Brussels, Riyadh, Jerusalem, and Amman from April 26 to April 30, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.
While in Brussels, Pompeo is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and participate in the NATO Foreign Ministerial, where he and 28 NATO allies will discuss the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government meeting in July.
Pompeo will then meet with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Jordan to discuss “critical regional and bilateral issues.”
Trump nominated Pompeo, the former CIA director, to serve as his secretary of state last month following Rex Tillerson’s ouster.
Pompeo met resistance from some Democratic senators who raised concerns about his opposition to the Iran nuclear deal and previous statements about Muslims and gays.
In the days leading up to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s vote on his confirmation, it appeared Pompeo was at risk of receiving a negative recommendation from the panel after its Democratic members and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said they would oppose his nomination.
But after speaking with President Trump, Paul switched his vote and supported Pompeo, a change that allowed the Foreign Relations Committee to endorse his nomination.
The Senate then confirmed Pompeo with a 57-42 vote Thursday.
