SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown has rejected key ethics bills that were passed by lawmakers in response to a series of political scandals.
The governor announced Tuesday that while politicians should be subject to constraints, the general activities addressed in the bills already are subject to regulation and disclosure.
Two Democratic senators, Leland Yee of San Francisco and Ron Calderon of Montebello, are suspended as they fight federal corruption charges. They are accused of trading influence for bribes and gifts.
Brown vetoed SB831 by Democratic Sen. Jerry Hill of San Mateo, which would have banned elected officials from requesting payments on their behalf to nonprofit organizations run by family members.
He also rejected SB1443 by Democratic Sen. Kevin de Leon of Los Angeles. It sought to ban tickets and reduce gift limits.
