U.Md. dorm evacuated due to fire

A University of Maryland dormitory was evacuated after a fire broke out early Thursday morning.

An electrical unit, possibly a charging device, ignited in a fifth-floor room in Denton Hall shortly before 4:30 a.m., according to Prince George’s County fire and emergency services. The blaze was relatively small, but smoke filled the floor’s hallway and the entire nine-story building was evacuated, the fire department said.

Students were allowed to re-enter the building after about 15 minutes.

One female resident of the dorm was taken to a hospital with an unknown illness. Fire officials said it was not clear whether her illness was related to the blaze.
