Sarles says no to NYC subway job

The head of New York City’s subway system is leaving the helm, raising questions of who will take over the largest transit system in the country.

It won’t be Metro’s General Manager Richard Sarles, though.

“He declined,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Friday.

Sarles was approached last week about the position being vacated by Jay Walder, Stessel said. Sarles has led D.C.’s system for barely a year, and only on a permanent basis since January. But he came to Metro after running NJ Transit, the sister system that feeds thousands of commuters into New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority each day. He knows New York and he knows the system there.

“He was flattered but he’s committed to Washington,” Stessel said.
