Republicans were defeated in the Alabama Senate election last Tuesday because the party ran a “flawed candidate,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said Sunday.
Democrat Doug Jones beat Roy Moore in a stunning upset in the race for Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ former Senate seat after Moore faced allegations of sexual misconduct.
“I think the explanation for Alabama was we had a flawed candidate who won the Republican primary and who couldn’t win the general election,” Cornyn told ABC’s “This Week.”
The top Republican said there’s no lesson for his party to learn from the loss other than making sure they nominate candidates who can win a general election.
“My party needs to make sure we nominate electable candidates,” he said. “Good candidates, who can win general elections. I don’t think the lesson of Alabama is more complex than that. Flawed candidate. Couldn’t win general election.”
