Cynthia Nixon says she’ll give marijuana ‘another shot’ if legalized in New York

New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon says she’ll smoke marijuana again if it’s legalized in the state.

The former “Sex and the City” star, in an interview with New York magazine, said she hasn’t used the drug since college, but she’s open to trying it again once legalized.

“I tried it twice when I was in college. It wasn’t for me, but I promised a number of people that when we legalize it in New York, I will give it another shot,” Nixon said.

The New York Department of Health released a report last month that concluded the state should have a regulated market for the substance, recommending a 7 to 10 percent tax and a one-ounce limit on how much could be bought. Legalization would bring tax benefits, a decline in arrests of minorities, and have health benefits for certain users, the report said.

Nixon is challenging Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who once referred to marijuana as a “gateway drug.” But last month, Cuomo acknowledged “the situation on marijuana is changing.” Stopping short of supporting legalization, Cuomo said there are still a lot of specifics to be answered about possible legalization, such as who can sell it, where it can be sold and in what quantities.
