U.Va. plans Rotunda renovation

The University of Virginia wants to freshen up its iconic Rotunda, which founder Thomas Jefferson modeled after the Pantheon in Rome.

The University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors has approved $22.9 million for phase one of the construction project, which includes replacing the roof and restoring capitals on the building’s columns.

The project will be added to a list of capital projects to be submitted to the state for funding in April. U.Va. is hoping for $12.95 million, with the remainder matched by private funds and donations.

Construction on the Rotunda was completed in 1826 for almost $60,000. The restorations would be the first major work performed on the Rotunda since the mid-1970s.
