Support for same-sex marriage reached a record high in the United States, a national poll found.
Seventy percent of respondents to a Gallup poll released on Tuesday said marriages between same-sex couples should be recognized as “valid” and “with the same rights as traditional marriages.”

The approval rating is the highest in the 25 years since Gallup started tracking the trend. Only 27% of respondents in 1996 approved of same-sex marriage, while that number rose to 60% by the time the Supreme Court ruled that such marriages are protected in the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision.
Republicans’ support for same-sex marriage has nearly doubled over the past 10 years and sits at 55%, marking the first time in the poll’s history that a majority of the GOP is in favor of it.
Comparatively, 83% of Democrats said same-sex marriages should be recognized as valid under the law, an increase of 14 percentage points over the past decade.
The younger generations are more supportive of same-sex marriage, though a majority in every age range supports it, the breakdown by age showed.

For the first time, over 70% of respondents between ages 35 and 54 support same-sex marriage, while 60% of people 55 or older support it. Eighty-four percent of the 18-34 demographic supports it.
The poll was conducted between May 3 and May 18 and included 1,016 adults, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
