Fire destroys two-story Chillum home

It took the Prince George’s County Fire Department some 40 minutes Sunday morning to bring under control a blaze at a two-story home on the 8000 block of 18th Avenue in Chillum.

Units arrived on scene at 3:45 a.m. to find fire showing from the back of the building, possibly having started on a deck before making its way inside the house. At one point fire fighters were forced out of the building as the blaze burned through the roof of the home. They then knocked down the bulk of the fire from the exterior.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The occupants displaced by the fire were assisted by the county’s citizen services unit.

Damage to the home and its contents were valued at about $150,000.
