Clinton ally: Donor will give $5 million to vets in exchange for Trumps’ tax returns

A Democratic super political action committee supporting Hillary Clinton’s presidential bid announced Wednesday that one of its donors is willing to contribute millions to a veterans organization of Donald Trump’s choosing if he agrees to release his tax returns.

David Brock, a veteran political operative who founded Correct the Record, told reporters on Wednesday that a GOP donor had approached him with a commitment to giving $5 million to any charity group supporting retired and returning servicemembers so long as Trump’s tax returns are made public before the Republican National Convention kicks off next week.

“He’s an old-fashioned Republican who thinks this is about character … and wants to ensure that the Republican delegates next week know what they’re getting into when they nominate Donald Trump,” Brock said of the donor, who wished to remain anonymous.

Trump, who delivered a speech on Monday about reforming the Department of Veterans Affairs, has dismissed calls to release his tax returns by promising to do so once they are done being audited by the IRS. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has not clarified whether he will release his returns prior to the November election if the IRS has not concluded its audit by then.

Brock said the anonymous GOP donor has no intention of using veterans as political props. He pointed to Trump’s own promise to contribute the money he received at a fundraiser in January to a variety of veterans groups.

“Trump has put veterans front and center and into the mix himself,” Brock said.

A spokeswoman for the Trump campaign did not return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
