‘You’re right, I’m a hypocrite’: Rock star confesses climate change sins

The singer for Radiohead admitted during an interview that he feels like a hypocrite when it comes to the issue of climate change because he often partakes in lifestyle choices that harm the environment.

“The thing I’ve always struggled somewhat with is that if I’m campaigning on climate change, I’m someone who has to fly for my work, so, boom, I’m a hypocrite,” Thom Yorke told BBC radio show Desert Island Discs.

“I totally agree I’m a hypocrite, but I’m trying to do something about it, and yes, you’re right, I’m a hypocrite,” he said.

A longtime environment activist, Yorke has done work on behalf of Friends of the Earth. In a 2006 interview with the Guardian, Yorke said because of the locations and the logistics to get to their gigs, he “absolutely” felt like a hypocrite. Regarding what he could do to reduce their carbon footprint, he replied, “F–k knows.”

Since then, the band has made efforts to make their concerts more environmentally friendly.

Monday morning saw the “Shut Down DC” demonstration in the nation’s capital, where hundreds of protesters brought traffic to a halt by flooding intersections to combat climate change. “So a few idling cars, if it forces them to wake up, is more than worth it,” a spokesperson for the event told the Washington Examiner.
