Viewers are doing 360s over Palios

When viewers see Christos Palios? images, they have to have them. For each of Palios? panoramic works, on display at The Gallery at Marcus-Boyd, the Baltimore artist overlaps over 350 images to “create a giant, seamless composition of a viewer?s entire field of vision,” he said. “They?re best printed huge ? six, seven, eight, evennine foot.”

Palios? “works are intriguing, not only because of the image, which is a mental exercise to look at, but because he prints on canvas,” said Linda Krensky, owner of Light Street Gallery in Baltimore who recently juried a panoramic photography competition. “Many of his works look like paintings.”

Palios is very particular about the places he captures, Krensky added. “He?s careful to get images that make an impact.”

“It?s all about the location,” Palios agreed. “Serendipity has to lead me there ? either modern and elegant or abandoned and dilapidated places.”

Bus Retro, Palios? signature piece, depicts a quaint, decommissioned bus from the late 1970s parked beside a junk yard in Larissa, Greece.

Other places captured in his works on display in the exhibit include Bolton Hill, Penn Station and the Korean Memorial in Washington, D.C.

“Seeing his Bus Retro in Spoons evoked an emotion in me,” said Federal Hill resident Edwin Barron who sought out a reproduction of the photograph. “I needed to know more about the picture and the artist.”

Palios, first generation Greek-American, describes his 360-degree images as opened spheres flattened to resemble atlases.

In 2006, he started his photography business, Giant Colorful Revolution, after shooting on the side for 15 years.

“Once you meet him, you become as drawn to the artist as the artwork,” Krensky explained. “He?s young, enthusiastic, energetic, smart and accomplished. His work is engaging and very unique.”
