Vice President Joe Biden admitted Tuesday in an interview with Stephen Colbert that he’s been jerking people around with his comments about running for president in 2020.
“I learned ya wanna become the most popular guy in America,” Biden joked in a pre-taped interview that aired on the host’s late night show on CBS. “I did that for one reason: so I can announce now I’m not running to be popular again.”
A day earlier, Biden told a Senate reporter, “I am going to run in 2020.” The reporter asked Biden, who was visiting his former Senate colleagues if he was being serious. Biden repeated on Tuesday evening what he had told the reporter on Monday.
“I’m a great respecter of fate. I don’t plan on running again, but to say you know what’s going to happen in four years is not rational,” Biden responded.
The vice president joked that in 2020 when President-elect Trump is up for reelection, the Republican will be younger than him, but without the edge.
“Donald Trump’s gonna be 74. I’ll be 77 – in better shape,” Biden said.
