County school buses involved in two separate collisions

Two separate school bus accidents in Anne Arundel County on Friday left one man dead and two students injured, police said.

This is the second time a pedestrian was killed in Anne Arundel County this week.

An Annapolis Bus Co. school bus en route to Eastport Elementary School struck and killed an Annapolis man on Bay Bridge Avenue at about 8:30 a.m., said Officer Hal Dalton, a police spokesman.

James Wilbur Jackson, 84, of Windsor Avenue in Annapolis, was crossing Bay Ridge Avenue when the bus made a left turn onto the street and struck him. Jackson died minutes after the collision.

None of the approximately 34 students on the bus were injured, police said. Bay Ridge Avenue was closed to traffic from Monroe Street to Chesapeake Avenue for at least two hours, police said.

Annapolis police identified the driver as Mikia Devon Pindell, 35, of Annapolis. Dalton said an investigation is still pending and no charges have been filed against Pindell. Officials from Annapolis Bus Co. did not return calls Friday.

About 9:30 a.m. Friday, another school bus was in an accident.

One Anne Arundel County school bus rear-ended another in Bowie at the intersection of Routes 3 and 450, said Sgt. Thornnie Rouse, spokesman for the Maryland State Police. All 67 Lindale Middle School students on the bus were transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center as a “precautionary measure,” Anne Arundel County Schools spokeswoman Maneka Wade said.

All students were released, according to a center spokeswoman.

The driver of the bus, Lee Evans, 75, of Baltimore, was charged by state police with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision and negligent driving.

This is the second time that a pedestrian has been struck in the county. The other was a Glen Burnie man who was crossing Ritchie Highway by foot Sunday night when he was struck and killed by a pickup.
