Connecticut’s second-largest newspaper calls on Trump to resign

Connecticut’s second-largest newspaper published an editorial calling for President Trump’s resignation over the “damning evidence” that he is acting in his own interest instead of the country’s.

The Bridgeport-based Connecticut Post argued a “mountain of evidence” implicates Trump in “conduct far outside the accepted norms of a democratic leader.”

The editorial board said Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is an impeachable offense because he urged the leader to investigate his potential general election opponent Joe Biden and his son Hunter, which “would benefit him politically and has nothing to do with legitimate U.S. interests.”

“The proper next step for the president is clear. He should resign. He has repeatedly proven himself unfit for office and appears to view the presidency as a position meant to benefit himself personally, not as one that must represent the interests of an entire nation,” the editorial board wrote in the piece published Friday.

It acknowledged, however, that Trump is unlikely to step down, even if he is impeached by the House. The Senate, controlled by Republicans, would have to convict Trump to remove him from office.

“Because there’s almost no chance he is going to step down, Congress’ work becomes that much more vital,” the board wrote.

Connecticut’s entire congressional delegation has backed impeachment proceedings.
