Surgeon General Jerome Adams thinks the recent spikes in coronavirus cases can be reversed in as quickly as a few weeks if people wear masks and practice other public health guidelines to reduce the spread of the virus.
“Just as we’ve seen cases skyrocket, we can turn this thing around in two to three weeks if we can get a critical mass of people wearing face coverings, practicing at least 6 feet of social distancing, doing the things that we know are effective,” Adams said Sunday on CBS News’ Face the Nation. “It’s important for the American people to understand when we’re talking about the fall, we have the ability to turn this around very quickly if people will do the right thing.”

Face coverings, social distancing, and refraining from large public gatherings have been recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help control the spread of the coronavirus. In recent weeks, cases of the coronavirus have spiked in several states, largely in the South.
The spikes in some states have prompted local and state leadership to halt reopening plans and increase public health mandates.
Last week, the United States reported its biggest single-day spike in coronavirus cases with over 60,000 new cases on Friday. The country has now recorded more than 3 million cases and is nearing 140,000 deaths as a result of the pandemic.
