CNN hosts Wolf Blitzer and Jake Tapper said they believed Democrats will have a tough time extending the impeachment trial because Republicans appear to have enough votes to kill motions to bring more witnesses.
“They need four Republicans,” Blitzer said Thursday about the number of votes Democrats need to call witnesses. “Right now, the Democrats look like they’re in trouble.”
“They sure do,” Tapper said. The host went on to say there were ill “omens” for Democrats regarding the witness vote on Friday.
Republican senators signaled Thursday that they believed the trial would come to a close this week. “It does look to me like we are headed toward ending this week sometime,” Sen. Roy Blunt said.
Sen. Pat Roberts told the Washington Examiner, “I don’t think there is anything more than needs to be said.” If the Senate decides not to vote for more witnesses, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could call a vote on the two impeachment articles.
