Police arrest three students in stabbing case

Baltimore police arrested three Southwestern High School students Wednesday afternoon in connection with the lunchtimestabbing Tuesday in the building?s rear parking lot.

However, the 16-year-old student who police believe wielded the knife in the attack of 20-year-old student Paul Jones has not been found.

Police spokesman Donnie Moses said detectives are still looking for Antoine Martin, of the 800 block of Lyndhurst Avenue Moses said Martin will face assault and attempted-murder charges.

The victim, who suffered a serious chest wound in the attack, was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but has been released, hospital officials said.

Moses said Larry Spriggs, 18, of the 500 block of Hazlett Avenue, was arrested at home Wednesday morning, and Robert McCormick, 17, of the 1900 block of W. Fayette Street, and Robert Jones, 18, of the 500 block of Beechfield Avenue, were arrested later after being interviewed by detectives at the Southwestern district police station. All face assault and attempted murder charges as well.

Police said the dispute began after a dice game at school Monday and intensified Tuesday. Police allege the three students arrested helped corner Jones and prevented him from escaping.

“That?s participating in the assault,” police spokeswoman Nicole Monroe said. “This was a very bad stab wound ? a half-inch away from his heart and just centimeters from puncturing an artery,” she said. “There was a lot of blood.”

Several students witnessed the attack, police said.

Vanessa Pyatt, a school system spokeswoman, said school police have provided three extra officers to Southwestern and regular searches will continue while a security evaluation is prepared. Pyatt said that as policy, school police conduct random searches at city middle and high schools, as requested by principals or school officers.
