Salena Zito: Four score and 155 years ago

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Nov. 19 marks the 155th anniversary of former President Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address. This week on Mainstream Meets the Beltway, the Washington Examiner’s Salena Zito is joined by Michael Kraus, curator of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum. Kraus is a Civil War historian who co-wrote the book Gettysburg and Stories of Valor. According to Kraus the short speech Lincoln gave in Gettysburg is “the most eloquent 272 words ever spoken.”

After insight from Michael Kraus, the Washington Examiner’s commentary editor, Tim Carney, joins the show. Carney has a new book coming out in February, “Alienated America: Why Some Places Thrive While Others Collapse.” During the Trump campaign, lots in America agreed with the candidate’s thoughts on the death of the American dream. Born in New York and living in D.C., Carney disagreed, saying the American dream is very much still alive. “Alienated America” explores those areas of America that have felt alienated and ignored.
