Ex-elementary school teacher and children’s author arrested after alleged sexual abuse of student

A former elementary school teacher and children’s book author in California was arrested on charges of sexual assault against a child, authorities said.

Paul Lowe, 61, was taken into custody Nov. 9 and faces 14 counts of sexual assault against a child, police in Riverside, California, said.

The arrest was the result of an investigation into Lowe launched by the department’s Sexual Assault — Child Abuse Unit after a 32-year-old man said Lowe had sexually abused him over two decades ago, according to police.

The man said Lowe was his fourth-grade teacher and alleged multiple incidents of sexual assault took place on school grounds, according to investigators.

Most of the alleged incidents took place away from school, the man said.

Between 1997 and 2002, Lowe was a teacher at Taft Elementary School in Riverside until he resigned after he was convicted of sexually assaulting a minor in Los Angeles County, authorities said.

Outside of the classroom, Lowe, now a registered sex offender, worked at the local YMCA and youth camp, coached soccer, and wrote a children’s book using the name “Edric Phoenix,” according to a report.

Detectives think Lowe victimized more children who have yet to come forward, and the former elementary school teacher is being held on $5 million of bail, they said.
