Real estate mogul and convicted killer Robert Durst dies at 78

New York real estate mogul and convicted killer Robert Durst died on Monday.

Durst, the 78-year-old heir to a New York real estate empire and the subject of 2015 HBO true-crime documentary The Jinx, was reported dead at the San Joaquin General Hospital.

The 78-year-old man had been taken to the hospital for testing, Durst’s lawyer, Chip Lewis, told the New York Times. Durst then went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived, Lewis said.

Durst had previously tested positive for COVID-19 in October 2021 and was placed on a ventilator afterward.

A Los Angeles jury found Durst guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of his friend Susan Berman, who had been shot in the head in 2000. He was also suspected of killing his first wife in 1982. Durst went to trial over charges of murdering his neighbor Morris Black in 2003, but he was acquitted due to a lack of forensic evidence.

While Durst had denied killing Berman in court, he admitted to several murders in a passing comment recorded in The Jinx.

Durst had been on the run for several years, avoiding law enforcement. The former mogul was arrested in 2015, one year after the final episode of The Jinx premiered.
