‘We’ve got to get more confrontational’: Quotes of the week

The past week was dominated by the guilty verdict handed to former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent fallout. But some choice comments in the run-up to the verdict on Tuesday led to a rebuke from the judge in the case, potentially opening the door to an appeal from the defense team. Here are the quotes of the week.

“I am very hopeful. … I hope that we are going to get a verdict that will say, ‘Guilty, guilty, guilty.’
“And if we don’t, we cannot go away. We’ve got to get more confrontational.”
Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, speaking to a crowd of protesters in Minnesota on Saturday ahead of the verdict in the Derek Chauvin murder trial

“After traveling across state lines to incite riots, her orders recorded on video last night at the Brooklyn Center directly led to more violence and a drive-by shooting on National Guardsmen in Minnesota.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Sunday night while announcing a resolution to expel Waters from Congress

“Maxine Waters is inciting violence in Minneapolis — just as she has incited it in the past. If Speaker Pelosi doesn’t act against this dangerous rhetoric, I will bring action this week.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in response to Waters’s intervention

“I’ll give you that congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned.”
Judge Peter Cahill said of Waters’s comments about the Derek Chauvin trial. Chauvin was subsequently found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter
