Jail isn’t preventing 12 Alexandria inmates from showing off their artwork.
The inmates are participating in an art competition at the detention center, where they’ll display their work for their peers and compete for prizes.
The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office says this is the second year for the art program. Eleven men and one woman have entered original pencil and watercolor drawings. Another 50 inmates will judge the works.
The winners will receive money — $20 for first place, $15 for second place and $10 for third place — that will be added to their canteen accounts.
The art show “provides a positive impact on inmates who are in our facility and we are delighted to give them this opportunity,” Cherye Echane, volunteer coordinator for the sheriff’s office, said in a statement.
