Kim Jong Un calls for second summit meeting with Trump on denuclearization

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is ready for a second summit meeting with President Trump to talk about denuclearization.

Kim wants to hold the summit to speed up the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula, Moon said, according to the Washington Post.

Kim and Trump met in their first summit earlier this summer in Singapore where the two discussed denuclearization. Soon after, Trump said a second meeting would happen in 2019, after signs emerged North Korea was not moving as rapidly as the U.S. wanted.

Moon and Kim signed a joint statement during their summit, in which Kim vowed to permanently dismantle a missile test and launch site. He also said he would permanently take apart and decommission a key nuclear site if the U.S. took “corresponding steps.”

Trump responded to the statement on Wednesday, lauding the promises made by Kim as “exciting.”

Moon said Kim also expressed interest in having Secretary of State Mike Pompeo come to North Korea.

“Chairman Kim Jong Un said he wants Secretary Pompeo’s North Korea visit and a second summit with President Trump to happen at the earliest convenience in order to speed up the denuclearization process,” Moon told reporters in Seoul.

Pompeo said the U.S. was “prepared to engage immediate” with the North to move dialogue along, the Post said.
