Columbia man gets maximum for robbery

The Columbia man who robbed a pizza delivery man was sentenced to the maximum of 20 years in prison for armed robbery Friday.

Omar McLennan, 22, robbed Tariq Jawaid at gunpoint in November 2005, three years after being convicted of robbing another pizza delivery man and a Mobile gas station in the same day.

Howard Circuit Court Judge Richard Bernhardt considered McLennan?s criminal record in his decision, said Assistant State?s Attorney Susan Weinstein.

“Admittedly, [McLennan] did commit three armed robberies by the age of 21,” said McLennan?s attorney Spencer Gordon, who asked Bernhardt for a shorter incarceration followed by probation.

Gordon said he expected a lighter sentence, because McLennan was acquitted of the use of a handgun charge earlier this year.

In the 2005 robbery, McLennan and his accomplice, Pedro Mendez Jr., approached Jawaid, near Columbia Mall, according to court records.

McLennan jammed a handgun into Jawaid?s stomach then stole a pizza and about $100.
