Trump Damns His Own Swearing Habit

Donald Trump told supporters in Louisiana Thursday night he wouldn’t use a curse word to describe the “political hacks” negotiating America’s trade deals. It led to a pledge that he’d swear off the habit for good.

“What I’d do is, instead of political hacks—we have hacks, I know some of them—they’re political hacks. They get their jobs—I won’t use foul language, I’m just not going to do it,” he said, waving his hand. “They’re all saying, ‘Do it! Do it!’ No. I’m not.”

He continued to make his point for a moment before singling out a woman in the crowd who he said was imploring him not to curse.

“A woman here is on my side — you’re right! She said don’t do it! Even if it’s not a bad word, if it’s a little bit off, they’ll kill me. So I won’t do it,” he said. “I’ll never do it again, actually. And I’ll never even copy somebody, what they ask me to say.”

Trump repeated a crowd member’s vulgar description of Ted Cruz at a rally on the eve of the New Hampshire primary, which Cruz addressed by saying, “I don’t respond in kind.” Trump went on to win the state by nearly 20 percentage points.

The Times-Picayune captured footage of a crowd member wearing a Trump button that featured one of the candidate’s favorite lines: “Bomb the hell out of ISIS.”
