Trump rips Denmark’s prime minister for ‘nasty’ comments on Greenland offer

President Trump defended his decision to postpone a visit to Denmark after its prime minister criticized the president’s proposal to purchase Denmark.

Trump spoke to reporters on Wednesday on the South Lawn of the White House before boarding Marine One on his way to a campaign event in Kentucky.

Trump ripped the way Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen chose to reject Greenland discussions, asserting that Frederiksen’s “nasty” comments were insulting to the United States.

“That it was an ‘absurd’ idea was nasty. I thought it was an inappropriate statement,” Trump said. “All she had to do was say, ‘No, we wouldn’t be interested.'”

“Don’t say what an ‘absurd’ idea that is. She is not talking to me. She is talking to the United States of America. You don’t talk to the United States that way,” Trump continued. “Now, President Obama when they wouldn’t let him land in the Philippines, when they treated him so badly in some places. The Philippines is one that comes to mind. That’s different. They can treat him any way they want to, that is up to him.”

Trump announced on Tuesday that he was postponing a scheduled meeting with Frederiksen after she called idea of selling Greenland “an absurd discussion.”

“Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time,” Trump tweeted on Tuesday.

“The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!” Trump said.
