ThinkProgress, a news website linked to a liberal think tank, is shutting down on Friday.
The site, connected to the Center for American Progress, will instead be used as a platform for CAP scholars to post. It will no longer function as an independent entity focused on original reporting. They had been searching for a buyer to take over the company but were unsuccessful.
“Given that we could find no new publisher, we have no other real option but to fold the ThinkProgress website back into CAP’s broader online presence with a focus on analysis of policy, politics, and news events through the lens of existing CAP and CAP Action staff experts,” Navin Nayak, the executive director of the CAP Action Fund, told the Daily Beast. “Conversations on how to do so are just beginning, but we will seek to reinvent it as a different platform for progressive change.”
Many members of the staff will lose their jobs, while some are now employed elsewhere.
The staff unionized in 2015 as a result of editorial friction, and they proceeded to try to wrestle editorial control away from senior leaders at CAP.
