A Metro worker who was hit by a train in a rail yard car washing station in May has been released from the hospital, nearly three months later.
The mechanic, a veteran employee with 28 years at the agency, was struck by a train at the Shady Grove rail yard on May 29 when he entered a shop door from outside and crossed over the track as a train was entering.
Although the train was traveling at 7 mph, the mechanic was dragged 38 feet and it took more than an hour for rescue crews to free him.
He reportedly lost a foot among other injuries.
The transit agency has blamed the man for having a “temporary loss of situational awareness,” as the cause of the accident. He had his head down as he entered the shop. Metro has said it is installing safety mirrors and locks on such exterior doors at rail shops in response to his accident.
The man is still recuperating from his injuries, according to Metro, but recently returned home to be with his family.
