President Trump’s defense team will “address” the corruption charges against Hunter Biden and his father, Vice President Joe Biden, as well as the Steel Dossier during their impeachment trial arguments.
Trump’s personal lawyer Jay Sekulow, who will lead the defense team, told reporters the Biden’s would be included in their case after Democrats defended them extensively in their arguments against the president.
Sekulow said Democrats “opened up the door as wide as a double door on the Hunter Biden, Joe Biden Burisma issue,” during their three days arguing for the Senate to convict President Trump on two articles of impeachment.
Democrats used the time to debunk corruption claims stemming from Hunter Biden’s lucrative job on the Ukraine gas company board while his father served as the point person for Ukraine while in the White House.
“I guess they figured that was their way of getting ahead of it.” Sekulow said. “We will address it.”
Sekulow told reporters the defense team would also argue Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign solicited foreign interference when it paid for the Steele Dossier, a file of unverified and salacious allegations about President Trump that were later used as the basis for a federal investigation into whether Trump colluded with the Russians to win the White House.
“Was that not foreign interference?” Sekulow asked.
“We are are going to rebut and refute and we are going to put on an affirmative case tomorrow. But that’s just one issue.”
Trump’s defense team will begin three hours of arguments at 10 a.m. Saturday and will complete their case on Monday and Tuesday.
Trump is charged with obstruction of Congress and abuse of power.
