Dr. Anthony Fauci was audibly booed by fans before he threw the first pitch at Tuesday’s Seattle Mariners game against the New York Yankees.
Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, might have been seeking redemption when he stepped on the mound at T-Mobile Park prior to the game.
The nation’s leading figure in the fight against COVID-19 was ridiculed in 2020 when he threw out a horrific first pitch before the Washington Nationals’ opening day.

He completely missed the target then, but he appeared to have been practicing ahead of his pitch in Seattle.
Fauci lobbed the ball, which was caught easily by Scott Servais, the manager of the Mariners.

After the throw, Servais had Fauci sign his mask.
Along with throwing the first pitch, Fauci was also honored with the Hutch Award.
“The Hutch Award was created in 1965 in honor of Fred Hutchinson, the former MLB pitcher and manager who died from lung cancer the previous year,” according to a release posted on the Mariners’ website.
“The honor was established by his longtime friends and is given annually to an active MLB player who ‘best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire’ of Hutchinson, by persevering through adversity.”
Fauci is only the second nonplayer to be honored with the award, the release noted.
