Rep. Thomas Massie warned President Trump on Friday that going to war with House conservatives and Democrats will only stymie his legislative agenda.
Massie, a Kentucky Republican, said on MSNBC Friday that those two groups together easily have the votes to block anything Trump wants to do.
“If you declare war on conservatives and Democrats in the House, you’ll never get to 218,” Massie said. “You’ve got to do the math.”
Massie said Trump has taken the side of establishment Republicans in taking shots at conservatives, and is blaming them for the failure of the American Health Care Act last week.
He said Trump ran on draining the swamp as an outsider to Washington, but now that he’s in the capital he’s aligning himself with entrenched Republican interests that will cost him in Congress.
“When they’re taking all the PAC money and they’ve been there forever, maybe those aren’t the people he intended to work with when he got to Washington, D.C.,” Massie said. “We’re waiting for him to drain the swamp.”
“He’s getting bad advice,” he added.
