The District has a problem with kids actually showing up for school, but Mayor Vincent Gray just can’t stay away. He’s decided to hold the 2011 State of the District address at Eastern High School, the second big event in nine days on the recently renovated Northeast campus.
The annual speech was originally set for the Convention Center in Northwest, but following a retreat with his Cabinet, Gray said there was a “very strong sentiment that it would be good to go out into the community and make it more convenient for people to get to.” Eastern is at 1700 N. Capitol St. SE.
Gray held a hearing on D.C. Public Schools’ budget at Eastern on March 14. “For those who were there, you had to be impressed by the building … it’s called the pride of Capitol Hill, and it certainly is the pride of Capitol Hill.”
The mayor said he is arranging free parking for the “hundreds” he expects to attend the State of the District.
Last year, Adrian Fenty held the State of the District at the Deanwood Recreation Center in Northeast.
