The Washington Post‘s fashion critic was skeptical of first lady Melania Trump’s outfit as she unveiled the White House’s Christmas decorations.
Robin Givhan, a 2006 Pulitzer Prize winner, published her latest column on Tuesday titled, “Melania Trump’s Christmas decorations are lovely, but that coat looks ridiculous.”
“But more than a silly fashion folly, the coat is a distraction. It’s a discomforting affectation taken to a ludicrous extreme. In a video that is intended to celebrate the warmth and welcoming spirit of the holiday season, that simple flourish exudes cold, dismissive aloofness … her attire suggests that she’s casually passing through and has little affinity for the occasion,” she wrote.
In the video of Trump viewing the decorations, she was wearing “a dress with a simple jewel neckline, white stiletto-heeled pumps,” and a white coat that is draped over her shoulders. The coat-over-the-shoulders style is a repeat of what she wore in the 2018 Christmas decorations unveiling video.
“She has styled herself in a manner that contradicts what her staff has so often insisted — that she is an engaged hostess who sweats the details and frets about her guests’ comfort,” Givhan continued. “Instead, she looks like the sort of host who greets her guests at the front door, tells them to remove their shoes and warns them not to sit on the Lalanne sheep.”
A number of people on social media were quick to jump on Givhan’s characterization of Trump’s outfit.
I personally love the coat (and don’t get why the @washingtonpost is devoting so much space to ripping on the First Lady’s fashion, but whatever…): https://t.co/fgTOBOEPKJ

The Princeton graduate/fashion blogger who wrote this appears to be a bitter hater Obama leftover with a severe case of #TDS – Melania looks stunning, her coat is beautiful, & the White House Christmas decor is fabulous – pure American patriotism on display! #ChristmasWhiteHouse https://t.co/CvDLKlY9PG

Today the #FakeNews media is apoplectic because the White House Christmas decorations are amazing and Melania is glamorous.

The @washingtonpost devoted an entire article to criticizing Melania Trump …for wearing a coat. https://t.co/M96XklS6rg
