GOP groups launch ads targeting Jon Tester

Two Republican groups have launched ad campaigns targeting Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., for his role in derailing President Trump’s nominee for secretary of Veterans Affairs.

America First Action, the super PAC aligned with President Trump, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee unveiled the ads Tuesday.

The 30-second TV commercial from America First Action calls Tester “disgraceful” and “dishonest,” and accuses the Montana Democrat of spreading “false information” about Rear Adm. Ronny Jackson. Trump tapped Jackson to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs following former Secretary David Shulkin’s ouster.

“Jon Tester’s been part of the D.C. swamp for far too long,” the ad states. “He’s betrayed our trust, our veterans, and our president.”

The spot concludes by saying “It’s time for him to go.”

America First Action will spend roughly $344,000 on the ad, which will air on Fox News and other stations across Montana, according to Politico.

In its own ad, the National Republican Senatorial Committee also says Tester has “got to go.”

The digital spot from the group includes clips of Trump at a recent rally condemning Tester.

Tester is accused in the ad of spearheading a “reckless crusade” to block Jackson’s nomination and “spreading flat-out lies.”

“It’s a disgrace to Montana,” the ad states. “Trump is right. It’s time for Jon Tester to go.”

After Jackson withdrew his name from consideration for VA secretary following allegations of workplace misconduct, Trump has attacked Tester for spreading false accusations about him.

The president has taken to Twitter to call for Tester to lose his upcoming re-election bid and said during an interview on “Fox and Friends” last week he believes the senator will “have a big price to pay.”

Trump won Montana by nearly 21 percentage points, and Republicans think the president’s criticisms of Tester are creating an opening against the Democratic senator.

Following Trump’s attacks on Tester, Matt Rosendale, the GOP’s top contender to challenger Tester, has seen a “major uptick” in donations.
