Swim turns treacherous

Six people swimming in the Potomoc River near SherwinIsland were rescued late Sunday afternoon by Montgomery County’s fire and rescue service after becoming distressed in the water. A 17-year-old was sent to the hospital for evaluation. Authorities believe the group was out for a hike when they decided to take the dip. – Leah Fabel

Triple-shooting leaves one dead near 9th and U Streets

One man died this weekend and two people were injured after a shooting in the Shaw neighborhood near 9th and U Street NW. The shooting death is reported to be the third on the same block in the past 16 months, despite the installation of surveillance cameras. An investigation is ongoing. – Leah Fabel

Five firefighters injured in Leesburg blaze

A house fire and heavy smoke engulfed five firefighters Sunday afternoon, causing two to be airlifted to MedSTAR and three to be taken to local hospitals for unspecified injuries. Smoke pouring from the home was reported around 2 p.m. The cause of the blaze is unknown. – Leah Fabel

Ex-Library of Congress worker guilty on porn charge

A former Library of Congress researcher pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography.

Michael J. Matheron, 58, of Silver Spring, faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. Matheron, a researcher, used his Library of Congress computer to access more than 300 sexually explicit images of child pornography, according to charging documents filed in federal court. – Scott McCabe

Hyattsville man pleads guilty to involuntary manslaughter

A 24-year-old Hyattsville man was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in  2006 accident in the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Antonio Washington was driving nearly 90 mph under the influence of marijuana without headlights on when the car veered off the highway into the grass and flipped over several times, authorities said. Passenger Ricardo Mitchell died of injuries a week later. – Scott McCabe
