The Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus declared victory on Friday after President Trump’s nominee for Army secretary, Mark Green, withdrew his name from consideration.
In a tweet, the group, led by openly gay members of Congress, said the withdrawal of the “horrifically anti-transgender” nominee represented a “[g]ood day for equality.”

Green’s critics had taken issue with comments Green made as a Tennessee state senator, including his opposition to the Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage and warning that transgender bathroom rights could traumatize female rape victims.
Green, who is the second Trump nominee to be Army secretary to back out, blamed “false and misleading attacks” as the reasons why he made the decision.
