WATCH: Maryland crossing guard saves student from being hit by a car

A Maryland crossing guard is being called a hero for saving a middle school student from being hit by a car.

Video taken from a nearby school bus Friday morning shows the student jogging across the street in a crosswalk when an oncoming car did not stop. North East, Maryland, police officer Cpl. Annette Goodyear quickly pushed the student to safety while allowing herself to be hit.

Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger posted the video on her Facebook page and praised the crossing guard.

“Gratitude and prayers to Corporal Annette Goodyear from the North East Police Department for her heroism in saving this [North East Middle School] student this morning,” Hornberger wrote. “I just spoke with Mayor Kline. The town of North East is already working on commendations for her bravery and swift action! Stay safe out there!”

“We’re just extremely proud of her actions,” Cpl. John Fakner of the North East Police Department said. “It was a split-second reaction that saved a child from potential injury. A job well done.”

Fakner added that Goodyear was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and later discharged, according to WJZ-TV. He said that the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Friday.
