President Trump took aim at Democrats over the investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and into his own campaign on Friday, suggesting to reporters that investigators should look into a book deal signed by former President Barack Obama instead.
“It’s a disgrace,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “We want to find out what happened to the last Democrat president. Let’s look into Obama the way they’ve looked into me. From day one they’ve looked into everything we’ve done.”
“They could look into the book deal that President Obama made,” Trump added. “Let’s subpoena all of his records.”
Trump’s comments appeared to be in reference to lucrative book deals that Obama and his wife Michelle Obama signed in 2017 for $60 million. The former first lady’s novel, Becoming, was published last year and instantly became a best-selling hit.
Trump’s attacks on Friday came two days after former special counsel Robert Mueller delivered a high-profile testimony in front of two House Committees on Capitol Hill. Mueller looked shaky during parts of the hearing and failed to recall key facts from his report.
Democrats now find themselves at an impasse regarding impeachment inquiries of the president with roughly 100 lawmakers now calling for the start of an impeachment inquiry against Trump.
“They want to investigate, they want to go fishing, and I watched Bob Mueller, and they have nothing,” Trump said.
