A District man was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for a 2009 stabbing death in Southeast Washington.

Bernard Gayles, 40, pleaded guilty in February to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 54-year-old Nathanial Hall. Prosecutors said Hall had been living with a woman in an apartment in the 800 block of Barnaby Street SE, and was told to leave because of his criminal past. Gayles angrily knocked on the apartment door, and fatally stabbed Hall multiple times before leaving.
