White House says Cruz contradicts himself with criticism of coming Biden nominee

Prompted by a reporter, the White House called out Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for his comments on President Joe Biden’s looming Supreme Court nomination on Wednesday.

Cruz criticized the Biden administration on his podcast for saying it will choose a black woman as the next Supreme Court justice, calling it offensive.

BIDEN LEANS ON BOTH PARTIES FOR INPUT ON SUPREME COURT

“You know, black women are, what, 6% of the U.S. population?” Cruz said. “He’s saying to 94% of Americans, ‘I don’t give a damn about you. You are ineligible.'”

A reporter brought up Cruz’s comments during Wednesday’s White House briefing, contrasting them with comments he made during the confirmation of conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

“Cruz told Barrett during her confirmation hearing, ‘Your children have been wonderfully well behaved. I think you’re an amazing role model for little girls. What advice would you give little girls?'” the reporter said to White House press secretary Jen Psaki. “Why do you think Republicans like Ted Cruz are acting so angry about Biden picking a black woman for the Supreme Court?”

A smiling Psaki responded that she had read the exact same Cruz herself.

“It’s important to note, as you just did in your question, that there was never an objection by Sen. Cruz to Donald Trump promising he’d nominate a woman,” Psaki said.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates made the observation two days before the briefing.

Several other Republicans have criticized the administration, with Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley calling it a reflection of “hard woke left” ideology. Nonetheless, Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump have made similar pledges in the past to name a woman to the court.

“The president’s view is that the notion that there has not been a black woman ever on the Supreme Court in 230 years is a problem with the process, not a lack of qualified people to nominate,” said Psaki. “But I think that’s a question best for Sen. Cruz.”
