A Prince George’s County judge is preventing the County Council from enacting legislation that would expand the number of tax drivers in the area.
The legislation, passed in July, would add 390 driver permits to the county’s existing 775 permits. The county planned to dispense the new permits through a lottery in November.
But the county’s three largest cab companies are challenging the legislation, saying it will cripple their businesses. A judge ruled in favor of the companies and prohibited the county from registering drivers for the lottery. The registration period for the lottery was slated to begin Monday.
The county now has until Oct. 7 to schedule another public hearing on the legislation, before the county Department of Environmental Resources can resume lottery registration.
