Maryland Art Place plans critics discussion

Maryland Art Place will feature a 2 p.m. forum discussion May 20 hosted by area artist Cornel Rubino as part of the 20th Annual Critics? Residency Program. The forum will be followed by a 3 p.m. reception.

Lilly Wei, the Critic in Residence and curator of the exhibition, MAPPING the Alternative, will be joined by the participating artists and writers, who will discuss the residency and issues about contemporary art with the audience. “We?ll talk about the exhibition itself, contemporary art and issues surrounding it, what?s lacking, what we?re doing well,” MAP?s executive director Julie Ann Cavnor said.

The artists celebrated in the exhibition were Jessie Lehson, Cory Wagner, Zachary Thornton, Elizabeth Crisman, Julie Kim Smith, Lesley McTague, Andrew Cook, Timothy App and Maggie Michael. The Residency Program takes place all year long and showcases artists chosen for their outstanding work by MAP critics. “The end culminates into a beautiful catalog,” Cavnor said. “The critic writes an overview, the writers critique the artist?s work and the artist?s work is displayed.”

This event is free and open to the public. The exhibit opens Tuesday and continues through June 7. For more information, call 410-962-8565 or e-mail [email protected]. Maryland Art Place is a nonprofit center for contemporary art established in 1981. It is in downtown Baltimore?s Power Plant Live.
