HHS chief Alex Azar discharged from hospital after another round of treatment for digestive infection

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar was discharged from the hospital Thursday following continued treatment of a digestive infection, an agency spokesperson said Friday.

Azar remains at home with his family in Indiana where he is resting to complete his recovery, but remains active in overseeing the agency.

“His doctors have advised him to rest in order to ensure a full recovery, and it is unlikely that he will be returning to D.C. until sometime next week,” a HHS spokesperson said Friday. “As previously stated, he remains engaged with the responsibilities of running the department.”

Earlier this month, Azar received antibiotic treatments from St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He returned to the hospital due to additional complications this month related to the infection.

Azar has led the HHS since the end of January. He previously worked as a pharmaceutical executive for a drug company based in Indiana.
