Musical Moon rising

Joo-Young Moon, a native of Seoul, South Korea, took the first step in her musical career playing the piano alongside her mother when she was 5.

That long-ago decision prompts a delightful evening at An die Musik, where she will make her debut in a piano recital Sunday evening.

“The most challenging piece I?m doing is the Chopin [?24 Preludes, Op28.?],” she said. “Each [prelude] is short, but hard technically and musically to get the essence of the pieces.”

Still, she is confident ? and glad for the audience, since she will be giving her Peabody Master of Music recital the next day. And performing in public is hardly a new experience for her. Moon graduated from Korea?s Kyung-Won University with the highest honors in performance. She has appeared in chamber music concerts in Brunswick, Maine and Baltimore. Today, she is a scholarship student in Peabody?s Graduate Performance Diploma.

When Moon was an undergraduate, she took a master class with Yong Hi Moon (no relation) of Peabody Institute.

“[Yong Hi Moon] is very famous in Korea, and after my master class, I knew I wanted to study more with her,” Moon said in her soft, melodic voice.

“[Joo-Young] isvery musical,” said Yong Hi Moon. “She has great insight into how the structure of music relates to the execution of the sound.”
