Some of the top teams inAmerica couldn’t stop the George Mason Patriots in the NCAA tournament, and the wet overcast weather Friday didn’t stop the community from honoring them one more time.
“I think we’re going to have to give their sports department half our public relations budget for the year,” said Fairfax City Mayor Robert Lederer. “They’ve accomplished something in two weeks something we couldn’t do in years. They got Fairfax on the front pages of newspapers and on television around the country.”
Spectators lined the streets and about 5,000 students came out to a pep rally to send the team into the offseason. Lederer presented the Patriots with the key to the city, the first time that has been done in the history of the municipality, officials said.
