Beating did not cause man’s death, police say

The beating suffered by a California man in Adams Morgan early Saturday did not contribute to his death, D.C. police said. Christopher J. Savage, 35, was assaulted at 3:45 a.m. Saturday on the 2200 block of Champlain Street at Kalormana Street. An autopsy found that trauma caused by the attack did not contribute to his death, Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes said. Authorities are still waiting on the results of toxicology tests. Savage had told police that he was taking medications. Savage refused to go to the hospital, and police dropped him off at a friend’s residence near 16th and U streets, authorities said. He was found dead on the couch about 12 hours later, police said. – Scott McCabe

Hate crime case against student dismissed

Prosecutors dismissed the hate crime case against a Georgetown University student after federal investigators could not prove that the teenager was the person who committed the assault, authorities said. Prosecutors said they could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Philip Cooney, 19, was the person who actually assaulted a Georgetown student near campus last September, according to U.S. Attorney’s Office spokesman Channing Phillips. The victim notified D.C. police after identifying Cooney on Facebook three weeks after the attack, police said. – Scott McCabe
